Canadian Home School Boards
Many home education families in Canada ask for information on how to contact school boards in their province. You will find a list of Alberta Willing Non-Resident School Boards below and British Columbia Home School Boards here.
Your
Family's
Educational Philosophy
Before approaching a school board it is helpful to write out your family's educational philosophy. When you check with the board you are interested in you will then be better able to ascertain if their educational philosophy matches yours. If you need help in clarifying your own educational philosophy check Canadian Home Education Parent Resources for some great home education parent resources.
Alberta has “Willing Non-Resident Boards” located throughout the province. You are not restricted to the location of the school board, instead you can choose whichever board meets your family’s needs. Alberta students have the choice of registering one of three ways. In a HOME EDUCATION PROGRAM a parent has decided to retain responsibility for educating the child. (Formerly know as a “Traditional" or parent-directed program). Students have more flexibility in what they cover. The onus is on the parent to “raise a good citizen”. In a SCHOOL AUTHORITY PROGRAM a parent has chosen to give a school authority responsibility for educating the child. Students are required to follow the Alberta Program of Studies (yes, the very same one you took your children out of). In a BLENDED PROGRAM a parent has decided to share responsibility for educating the child with a school authority. Blended students pull from both the School Authority Program and the Home Education Program. The closer you follow the government’s curriculum the more money you receive from the government. Read the information on the Alberta Government website to become informed as to how these will affect your home school. Also check with HSLDA (Home School Legal Defence Association) to see what the legalities are.

We integrate Christian discipleship into at-home learning, and highly value the flexibility in space in time as homeschooling families. At BCS@Home, we recognize the central role that parents play in the education of their children, and we are thrilled to offer a variety of homeschool programs to suit the unique learning needs of each family registered with us. These programs include Traditional Home Education, Shared Responsibility, Print-Based Distance Education for Grades 1-6, Online Education for Grades 7-12, the BCS@Home Hybrid Program for Grades 1-6, and a BCS@Home Nature School for Grades 1-9.
