Alberta Home School Programs

Before approaching any school, we highly recommend that you know your family's educational philosophy. As you decide how best to educate your child, having a 'game plan' of sorts can help in your decision making. If you need help, we have some great recommended resources to help you determine what will work best for you and your family.

Alberta has “Willing Non-Resident Boards” located throughout the province. You are not restricted to the location of the school, instead you can choose whichever board meets your family’s needs.  A list of some of these programs is included at the bottom of this page.

Alberta home-education students have the choice of registering one of three ways:

Home Education Program:

Here parents have decided to take full responsibility for educating their child(ren). Curriculum is entirely up to the parent to decide and to teach, and the onus is on the parent to “raise a good citizen”. More information can be found here.

School Authority Program:

Parents have chosen to give a school authority some responsibility for educating the child. This is what we often refer to as being a 'traditional' homeschooler. Students are required to meet the requirements laid out in the Alberta Program of Studies (yes, the very same one you took your children out of). That being said, you do not have to meet every requirement every year. You have the full duration of your time spent homeschooling to meet the govenrment requirements in the manner you find best. Materials are taught by the parent without teacher supervision, and you can use different curriculum to acheive the government-laid-out program of studies.More information on this program can be found here.

Shared Responsibility Program:

Parents have decided to share responsibility for educating their child with a school authority. This is what we often refer to as being an 'aligned' homeschooler. Students in this program pull from both the School Authority Program and the Home Education Program. Parents work under the supervison of teachers to teach the Alberta Curriculum from home, typically using the same or similar courses taught in school. You can find more information on the Shared Responsibility Program here.

No matter what route you chose to take with your home education, you must complete and submit a Home Education Notification Form before September 29th of each year, and you have to have a program plan submitted as part of yoru application. The board you choose to register with can offer assistance with these steps. For other legal requirements, or if you like reading through the legalese, you can refer to Alberta's Home Education Act.

If you are choosing to go with either the school authority program or the shared responsibility program, you will need to register with either a home education board (or a private school that offers home education). A comprehensive list can be found here. This resource has been put together by the Alberta Homeschooling Association, you can find more information about them on our support group page. There is also a break down of several of these programs included at the bottom of this page. We encourage you to use this resource to find a school that aligns with your family's educational goals. Once you have registered with a specific administration or school board you will be paired with a facillitator that can work with you to design your education plan whould you need assistance.

While we cannot choose your curriculum for you, we encourage you to browse our website to find a variety of educational options that will suit you and your family. Happy Homeschooling!

Started in 1994 by Christian home educators for traditional Christian home educators, Roots strives to enable and support parents who have the responsibility of educating their children for God’s glory and according to their children’s unique strengths and needs. In a reassuring environment, children have the flexibility to pursue many opportunities while being equipped to be the leaders of tomorrow. Home education incorporates character development, time management, skill development, relationships, and academics. Recognizing this broader scope liberates parents to set meaningful goals that meet their child’s specific needs. Education is important, but true education comes within a broader context. All Roots facilitators have extensive knowledge and understanding having either home educated their own children, were home educated themselves or have worked with families for numerous years. This gives them the ability to relate to everyday home education realities. Parents are in control of their child’s education and Roots staff will provide you support. Within the Roots community you will find the opportunity to participate in monthly support group meetings, fieldtrips, weekly gym programs and bi-monthly special events. Accepting Christian families from the Edmonton, Calgary and surrounding areas into the Roots society enables the Roots program to maintain its mandate to support and encourage Christian parents as they home educate their children “in the way [they] should go”. The WISDOM Home Schooling community began in 1995 when two home educating couples saw the need for parents to be supported with maximum freedom over their own schooling at home, deciding what is taught to their children, as well as how and when it is taught.

As a result of the founders' promise to uphold parents as primary educators, all decisions and policies are developed with the intent of supporting parents as they educate their children. Because the members of our facilitating team, our office staff and our Parent Advisory Council are home schooling parents or were home educated themselves, their responses and service reflect this insight and commitment. We support all teaching methods from highly structured to unschooling, classical to eclectic to world-schooling.

We are Christian, serving families with a wide variety of religious beliefs, as well as families who do not profess any particular faith. Our mandate is to build culture through supporting home education and family life, whatever that looks like for you. We serve home schooling families everywhere in the province of Alberta, Canada.
